{"id":956,"date":"2014-05-12T13:33:21","date_gmt":"2014-05-12T13:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/proqc.com\/blog\/?p=956"},"modified":"2023-09-25T12:06:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T12:06:03","slug":"whats-special-about-quality-engineers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/proqc.com\/blog\/whats-special-about-quality-engineers\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s special about quality engineers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quality engineers are at the heart of our organization. \u00a0As a third-party quality assurance firm, we count on the hundreds of engineers we have positioned throughout the world\u00a0to be the eyes and ears for our clients on-site at their factory locations. \u00a0As an exhibitor in this year&#8217;s World Conference on Quality &amp; Improvement last week,\u00a0we had the pleasure of meeting\u00a0more than a handful of these passionate quality professionals and have further assurance that these individuals share certain attributes unique to the industry. An eye for quality doesn&#8217;t quite do it justice, but rather a combination of attributes that are unique to these individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Quality Magazine recently posted an article discussing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qualitymag.com\/blogs\/14-quality-blog\/post\/91859-five-things-a-quality-engineer-should-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">Five Things a Quality Engineer Should Know<\/a>, and they were spot-on:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Business Management System<\/li>\n<li>Time Series Tracking for Process Metrics<\/li>\n<li>Process Documentation<\/li>\n<li>Data Analysis<\/li>\n<li>Organizational Metrics Improvement<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We agree with Quality&#8217;s summary,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #3b3a3a;\">Quality Engineers can be a more valuable asset to their organizations when they expand a silo scoping of their work efforts to orchestrate the big picture and its associated processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>But, what do we look for in our quality engineers?<\/strong><!--more--><\/h2>\n<p>For us, we do look for the certifications such as ASQ&#8217;s CQE, to further solidify an engineer&#8217;s\u00a0commitment to the industry and practice. \u00a0In addition, we want to see that they have an intuitive eye for quality. \u00a0For example, there are times when issues arise during on-site inspections when defects are noted that are not detailed within the product specifications. \u00a0A subjective call of major, minor or critical is required and must be justified to the client for a final disposition. \u00a0Of course, an\u00a0operations team is setup with Technical Supervisors and such, but the field engineers play an important role in identifying issues and capturing the broader scope of the production situation and how it relates to our client&#8217;s current and future orders.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does it mean to be an ASQ CQE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The American Society for Quality Control defines the CQE as: a professional who understands the principles of product and service quality evaluation and control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #252525;\">They are trained in researching and preventing unnecessary costs through lack of quality,<\/span><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0lost production costs, lost\u00a0market share<\/span><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0due to poor quality, etc. They possess the knowledge needed to set up quality control circles, assess potential quality risks, and evaluate\u00a0human factors and natural process variation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>More on the ASQ CQE exam\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/asq.org\/cert\/resource\/pdf\/certification\/inserts\/CQE%20Insert.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">here<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Beyond engineering&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Quality engineers that join our team must also be detail-oriented and have that attention to detail translate professionally through the reporting process. \u00a0We take proactive steps to ensure we work with qualified engineers in terms of their technical ability and experience, but that information is ultimately reflected in the reporting process. \u00a0It is the final report that gives supervisors and clients the information they need to make important decisions regarding shipment dispositions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Leadership&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Several months ago, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/business\/engineers-not-seen-as-leaders-b99204262z1-245301091.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">survey <\/a>indicated\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">only 9% of respondents said engineers would make the best chief executive officers, behind people from other fields including operations, finance, marketing, academia and sales. Our own observation of quality engineers felt additional factors were at play, but we\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">do expect our quality engineers to show leadership ability. \u00a0We b<\/span>elieve this is a skill not defined by the profession, but rather by an individual&#8217;s personality.<\/p>\n<p><em>If you&#8217;re thinking all of this describes you, and you&#8217;re wanting to work with a team of people that appreciates and values their engineers, contact us.
