{"id":1368,"date":"2015-06-11T16:46:06","date_gmt":"2015-06-11T16:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/proqc.com\/blog\/?p=1368"},"modified":"2025-07-01T09:00:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T09:00:13","slug":"national-safety-month-learn-share","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/proqc.com\/blog\/national-safety-month-learn-share\/","title":{"rendered":"National Safety Month &#8211; Learn &#038; Share"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Observed \u200bannually in June, National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/proqc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/safety-month-min.webp\" alt=\"National Safety Month\" width=\"30%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/topics\/safety-and-health-at-work\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\"> International Labor Organization<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p class=\"grayBox1\">Every <strong>15 seconds<\/strong>, <strong>a worker dies<\/strong> from a work-related accident or disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"grayBox1\">Every <strong>15 seconds<\/strong>, <strong>153 workers<\/strong> have a <strong>work-related<\/strong> <strong>accident<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 2.3 million people die every year from work-related accidents and diseases. More than 160 million people suffer from occupational and work-related diseases, and there are 313 million non-fatal accidents per year. The suffering caused by such accidents and illnesses to workers and their families is incalculable. In economic terms, the ILO has estimated that more than 4% of the world&#8217;s annual GDP is lost as a consequence of occupational accidents and diseases.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How safe would we be without standards?<\/strong><!--more--><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>A standard is a document, established by consensus and approved by a recognized body, that provides, for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The listing below includes examples of\u00a0safety standards from the <a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.ansi.org\/SDO\/ALI\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">American Ladder Institute (ALI)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.ansi.org\/SDO\/ASSP\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.ansi.org\/SDO\/ISO\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">International Organization of Standardization (ISO)<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.ansi.org\/SDO\/ISEA\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ladder Safety<\/li>\n<li>Fall Protection Safety<\/li>\n<li>Construction Safety<\/li>\n<li>Clothing &amp; Equipment Safety<\/li>\n<li>Workplace\u00a0Surface Safety<\/li>\n<li>Occupational Health &amp; Safety<\/li>\n<li>Consumer Product Safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Search ANSI standards here. \u00a0Or, ASTM standards, which\u00a0are used and accepted worldwide and cover areas such as metals, paints, plastics, textiles, petroleum, construction, energy, the environment, consumer products, medical services, devices and electronics, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Find an OSHA standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/law-regs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noindex\">here.<\/a>\u00a0 OSHA provides information on the rulemaking process used to develop workplace health and safety standards,<\/p>\n<p>The IEC develops International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What can you do to support National Safety Month and raise awareness:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Host a meeting to\u00a0review the &#8220;State of Safety&#8221; in your organization.<\/li>\n<li>Promote support and awareness on your social media networks.<\/li>\n<li>Learn more and share the information. \u00a0The National Safety Council offers guides that &#8220;help you explore safety and health topics at your own pace. Find training resources, webinars, best practices and more.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><em>Pro QC supports safety in the following ways:<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><em>1) When designing and manufacturing your product, we are able to confirm applicable safety standards and provide testing.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;For example, if you are designing a non-toy children&#8217;s product that contains a cord, there are a few different standards, including the toy safety standard, that exist and that may provide helpful guidance for you in determining the safe length of cord or string to be used.
