After describing what it is that\u00a0Pro QC<\/a> does the other day, an individual paused and\u00a0asked how we know what quality is when we see it. And, that’s a very interesting question that many conclude is\u00a0just too subjective to answer. Likely the most popular general definition is Deming’s idea of whether something is meeting or exceeding customer expectations. But, how can you tell? Our engineers would probably start talking about product specifications, testing requirements, tolerances and such. \u00a0But, another broader assumption is that quality focused organizations produce quality products. But, how can you tell if an organization is quality focused?<\/p>\n

In partnering\u00a0with companies of all sizes and various industries over the last thirty years, we have observed a few common\u00a0traits within organizations that are quality focused and successful at meeting or exceeding their customers’ expectations. (We highlight some of these organizations as Client Stories\u00a0in our\u00a0quarterly newsletter. )<\/em><\/p>\n

Our observations\u00a0include:<\/p>\n

1) Corporate culture:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

People talk about quality and are enthusiastic about it. They know it’s important.<\/p>\n

ASQ and Forbes\u00a0Insights recently\u00a0posted a must-read on this topic. “This first-of-its-kind global study offers actionable insight into how a more quality driven culture can accelerate business performance.” \u00a0Culture of Quality: Accelerating Growth & Performance in the Enterprise<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

2) Long-term vision:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Actions, such as investing in supplier performance and internal evaluation programs and\/or audits, focus on long-term results and\u00a0support sustainability and social responsibility.\u00a0Forbes identified six reasons companies should embrace CSR<\/a>\u00a0that we also see as quality contributors:<\/p>\n

  1. Innovation<\/li>\n
  2. Cost savings<\/li>\n
  3. Brand differentiation<\/li>\n
  4. Long-term thinking<\/li>\n
  5. Customer engagement<\/li>\n
  6. Employee engagement<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    3) Proactive:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    When there are issues with production identified through QC evaluation or otherwise, the organization is proactive. \u00a0Corrective actions are identified and implemented. \u00a0Failures are considered a learning experience as long as they don’t keep occurring.<\/p>\n

    “The proactive approach to a mistake is to acknowledge it instantly, correct and learn from it.” ~Steven Covey<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    4) Committed:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Quality and continuous improvement are a priority in good times and bad.<\/p>\n

    “<\/b>Continuous improvement is an ongoing effort to improve products, services or processes. These efforts can seek ‘incremental’ improvement over time or ‘breakthrough’ improvement all at once.”)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
